Zombie Make Up

1

Apply makeup. You can use makeup to create the illusion of a deathly pallor. A white/grey, purple or green tint works well for most people. Go to the drugstore and look for under-eye concealer or foundation base in these colors. Also purchase some dark eye shadow, eyeliner and baby powder.
  • Apply the base over your entire face and down your neck to get that unhealthy pallor.
  • Get directly under a light source and start using eye shadow to accent sunken areas of your face, such as your eye sockets and around the mid-way of your cheeks. Find shadows and darken those a lot.
  • Black out your eyes completely, but keep it under control. Make it look like your eye sockets have shrunken in about an inch. Get darker towards the middle and inside corners of the eyes, making sure to accent natural shadows but a bit more darker. (you can even try a darker gray shade; this sometimes works better for a realistic effect than black).
  • Use baby powder on your face to make your skin look dull and dead. Put a lot on so it looks like you're pale and dead and use some colors like pale light green or grayish-green eye shadow and apply it in some parts of your face and around the areas you had darkened.Lighten the color of your eyebrows. If you want to be a zombie you have to look as realistic as possible.
  • Apply solid red lipstick on parts where later you will apply your 'fake blood' on your lips and apply some dabs of purple or grayish or maroon lipstick to make it look like as if the blood is a bit dried and look more realistic.
  • If you want or can afford you can purchase contact lenses with the scary eyeballs.Well, most people think it is unnecessary to have them and any ways you can look scary enough even without these lenses but it's up to you to decide. There are many people who didn't use these on Halloween so there's no need to worry if you are not buying.

Mess up your hair. Try to make your hair look like you just rolled out of a grave. You can also use a lot of hair oil to make your hair look greasy.
  • Backcomb it at the roots. You can also apply hairspray, then use a small comb to brush hair in the "opposite" direction (toward the roots). Do this in small sections.Your hair will stay messed up (or in place) if you use hair oil and when you use other cosmetics on your hair (such as powder or your fake blood on your hair) it will come out easily in the end of the day when you take a shower.
  • Apply baby powder. Rub some baby powder into your hair to make it look grey and ashen.
  • If you have long hair, you can either leave it down or pull it into a messy up-do or even rub your head against your pillow. An extremely crooked ponytail, ratty braids or a falling-apart bun look appropriately disheveled.
  • Try starting with bedhead. If you're going to dress like a zombie first thing in the morning, try washing your hair right before you go to sleep the night before. Sleeping on wet hair will automatically make it look wild and mussed, and it might even get pushed far to one side like you've been lying in a grave. Or just not brush your hair when you wake up. You can also take separate sections of hair and tease them really well to give you the "undead zombie" hairstyle.
Make Fake Blood Intro.jpg

3
Make fake blood. For one fluid cup (probably more than you'll ever use), do this:
  • 1 cup of corn syrup or pancake syrup.
  • 1-2 tbsp of red food coloring.
  • Some chocolate syrup, like the kind you put on ice cream (not a "shell" type).
  • A couple small drops of blue or green food coloring, for color preference. This will give your "blood" a deeper, more realistic red.
  • Mix well and add small amounts of water until desired consistency/smearing factor is achieved.
  • An alternative mix uses honey for thickness and stickiness instead of corn syrup, washing-up liquid (dish soap) (e.g. Fairy Liquid) and red and blue food coloring. The washing-up liquid helps the blood wash out of your clothes later. Play around with the ratio of honey to washing-up liquid to get the right consistency - different brands vary. Be warned, though - pine-scented dish soap isn't very tasty, so if you're putting this mix in your mouth, use a minimal amount!
  • To get a more paste-like or thicker consistency, petroleum jelly works very well. Just mix the food dyes in, or used a crushed maroon or red eyeshadow.

Apply fake blood. Here's the fun part, unless you get sick easily. Go nuts.
  • Give yourself some wounds of some kind. Dribble blood into your hairline and let it run down your face, arms, legs and hands.
  • If you want bullet holes, get a really black marker and draw holes on your shirt. Then dribble down some fake blood around it.
  • For the "I just got done munching on the neighbor" look, pour a fair amount of blood into your hand, and then "eat" it, to get a nice mouth smear. Then, put some more in your mouth (this mix is non-toxic, unlike some others) and let it dribble down your chin and throat.
  • If you have time, allow some blood to dry a little (about 10 minutes) and then re-apply another layer differently, to get a nice effect.
  • Try to go for dark colored fake blood, as bright red blood will give you a cartoony appearance.

Get your costume looking right. Here are the basic steps for getting your clothes properly trashed.
  • Go outside and roll around in dirt. Try and find some mud and roll in it.
  • While applying fake blood, make sure you're messy, and get it on your clothes. This stuff runs and seeps in quite well and looks extremely convincing.
  • Use a knife or other pointed implement (carefully!) and rip holes into your costume.

6
Act zombie-like. Zombies are slow, stiff, dim-witted, can't talk well, if at all, and crave human flesh.
  • Make moaning and gasping sounds when you breathe through your mouth. It adds great effect. Your jaw should hang slack at most times. If you must make other noises, talk in gibberish or moan louder/higher. Moaning always works.
  • Shamble, don't walk. Lean forward and almost fall with every step. Adding a limp or dragging one leg works great as well. Swing your arms limply, like you don't ever use them.
  • When passing people, growl or groan at them and wave your arms. Some higher-level zombies tend to moan for "BRAINS!!!" as well. If you want to get some laughs, say "Hi!" to some people, and wave. You'll be hilarious. If you want to really freak someone out, go to a movie theater with a zombie movie out (if there is one). In the middle of the movie, where tension is highest, walk across the front of the screen. That will scare at least half the people in there.
  • Act stupid. The average zombie has an IQ barely above freezing temperature. They will run into walls, trip, fall, and can't work with their hands.

Step one of the zombie Makeup instructions, is something we are able to use for our film trailer. We have the make up to use to make the deadly look, The colours that we are going to use are the white/grey, purple green tint, to make the zombie look diseased. This will be really easy to do at out location as we have a lot of space to use for all of the stuff and some wooden benches and tables to sit down and apply the make-up.

step 2, the messy hair look is what we were going for anyway, our character has long hair so we a re able to mess it up and make it look messy.

step 5, we tried to use costumes, and ripped clothes and make them dirty which worked well. To make it more effective we could of made the clothes more ripped.
Step 6 is helpfull for our knowledge of zombies and is something that we will include in our film trailer to make it more effective and realistic, especially the crawling and moaning on the ground, and the stiff like walking.

World War Z Trailer.

The trailer starts with a long camera shot, showing a busy city in America. The way that the angle of the shot is set makes the audience get a feel for the setting already and is able to establish where this is set. The non- diegetic sound of the car horns, suggest that they are sat in a traffic jam and that something is holding them up. You then get a front close up through the windscreen of the car of a family, sat patiently playing eye spy. From the camera shot you can see the expressions on their faces and see that they all look happy and you can tell that they all get along as they are all enjoying the game and forgetting about the traffic jam. Through mise- en - scene you can see the family wearing everyday clothes, that are pretty casual and they are dressed as if the weather was too cold. You get an over the shoulder of both parents at the front, of the two girls behind them whispering, implying that they get along well and trust each other and clearly don't want the parents to hear. A close up shot of the other girl is shown, the reason for this is so you can get an understanding of what everyone looks like and from that close up you can see that the girl is the younger sister, from the fact she is holding a cuddly toy and when she smiles you can see that she has baby teeth still with some missing, suggesting she is still very young. All of a sudden you get a close up of the wing mirror being ridden into by a motorbike and you hear the diegetic sound of the glass smashing. The motorcyclist doesn't look like he is in any sort of uniform and therefore is probably just trying to get through the traffic jam as he is inpatient and as he has gone past in either anger or rush he has broken the wing mirror.

The low angle shot out of the roof of the car shows the importance of the hellicopter above and that something must of happened to cause this traffic jam if there are hellicopters looking. You can see the confusion and concern on the families faces and the dad even says.
" what is going on, hang on guys"
As he steps out of the car you see the worried look on his wifes face as you hear the diegetic sound of the sirens getting louder. As the husband turns you hear a big bang, where you see in a long shot that an explosion has happened, and you can see the fire and smoke in the distance. In this long shot you can also see the panic of people around them trying to run away and getting out of their cars. The wife then calls the husbands name in worry and you can see she is scared as he is on the edge of her seat leaning back. Screams and people shouting get louder, this is really effective as the trailer has got straight into the action, however has made you want to watch on as you dont quite know what the action is at this point. A man in uniform tell the family to remain in their car, as you see the close up of the police officer on his bike, you see a blur of a lorry at speed take the man out. A tracking shot then shows the lorry destroying everything in its path, stopping for nothing. You then hear a loud hight pitch non- diegetic sound, showing the panic on the families face as this is played, as they realise something bad is happening.

The film productions appear on the screen with loud shot beats, getting you ready for what is about to happen. Loud music then plays showing a birds eye view of the street, you can see people running around everywhere and see how chaotic everything is. The music stops and the mum asks her daughter if she is okay, whilst picking her up over her shoulder. The parents are surrounding their children trying to protect them. A low angle shot following three planes up in the sky are shown, telling the audience that this situation is pretty bad.The music starts again showing over the shoulder shots of guys in uniform up in the planes with guns looking over the city, showing their importance. The tracking shots of all the people running away is really effective as you feel their panic and you it makes you feel tense as you want them to get away.

They jump into a motor home type car as it it empty with the person who is believed  to of had the car is lying dead on the ground.  As soon as they jump into the vehicle, you get a close up shot of the passenger window as it gets head butted by someone and you see the glass shatter around it, this is really effective as it makes the audience jump as they were not expecting it and it shows the real danger they are in. You are then shown, a montage of clips showing the city in pieces, you see close ups of guns, fighting and people running away and then also birds eye view shots of the city being destroyed. A population loss graph shows on the screen and you watch it dramatically drop down and as the audience you know that something really big is happening and this entices you to watch on. Over the shoulder shots are used a lot when the army are shooting at the zombies when they are climbing all over a lorry. An extreme close up of a flare being lit by the family is shown whilst they are in a dark empty room. The echo of their voices shows how empty and quiet the room is, but as the audience you know this means something is about to join them. The build up of the shot of the husband about to break the door down is intense and he says "are you ready"
As he says that non diegetic music of helicopter propellers are played in the sound of a heat beat, building action. The music builds up even more when the family escape out of the door on the top of the roof and when running towards the helicopter with the husband being chased by the zombies.

The husband is then seen leaving his family and working with army to help out. This makes the audience want to watch on even more to see if he does help and if he comes back alive to his family. You see him in close up shots with a gun with explosions going off in the background being chased by the zombies. The repetitiveness of the husband saying he is coming back, makes you question if he actually will or not, as you see different shots of him and his family either crying or shouting his name in distress. The music carries on building up when shown a tracking low angle shot of the zombies trying to climb over this gigantic wall. It shows the zombies power over everyones else as the scramble amongst each other trying to get over the wall, and the way they are seen throwing themselves off the top shows how desperate and willing they are to turn the people into zombies and how dangerous that makes them. The music stops and the title appears with the loud short music, grabbing your attention to it and the date at the end.

Location

We have chosen to film our trailer at a paint ball site called campaign, the reason for this is because the setting perfect, and in placed in the woods and has an abandoned house that we wanted to include in our trailer to. We are lucky that Avraj works here so that we were able to get the whole site to ourselves and film whatever we wanted there.
There are different sections in the site, which have different scenery. In the picture above, we thought this would be a good place to use as it looks abandoned and empty. However we were unsure as it looked a bit like a scene you would see in a cowboy film.
This place was good as we could use the walls to hide behind as if we were hiding from the zombie and for shelter. The tall building in the background was useful as we thought we could get some good camera angles from up there or even use it for a place to shoot with the gun. The buildings also look real as if there were in a town, so we thought it would be a good idea to use it.

The location that we have chosen is in Cobham, so it is not far for us to get to either which is really helpful as we will be able to spend the whole day there as it wont take long to get there.

Questionnaire Findings.

In the questionnaire that we gave out to people of different ages, we found that majority of people that we asked preferred Zombie films. Action films was also a popular answer to and this helped us decide that we would like to make a film trailer on an Action packed Zombie film. The questionnaire has been very useful in helping us with our decisions and ideas for our trailer. For example we found that the people with ages between 15-18 were the ones who enjoyed watching Horror films the most. This meant that we had to make sure that our trailer would attract the audience of 15 to 18 year olds, and the males were more interested in the zombie horror films then the females.

Our findings also presented to us the setting in the woods and abandoned houses were the two most popular answers. The reason for this is because they both build up tension and the question of 'what is there with them'. Both of these settings could mean they may contain action as they could be joined with something they do not want to be and have to be prepared to defend themselves and they both create a creepy and mysterious feel.

The most popular prop that people would like to be seen the most is either a gun or a knife. The reason for this is because it means there will be some kind of action or murder. These weapons also create a sense of thrill and excitement, with gore to.

Our questionnaire has been very successful to us and helped us come up with some new ideas such as a zombie film trailer.

Costume Research.

I did some research on zombie film costumes. I found some pictures from films such as 'Shaun of the dead', 'World War Z' and '28 days later'. The clothes used are mainly casual, which are either ripped or covered in blood. The costumes are pretty simple and are commonly just shirts, jumpers and jeans in most zombie films. The reason for this is because the ' zombie apocalypse' happens unexpectedly so therefore they are not normally prepared, which is shown by some of the weapons they have in the first picture. The weapons normally used in these films are base ball bats or a crowbar, however in the first picture from 'shaun of the dead' they are also using random objects such as umbrellas.

The zombies, typically are wearing ripped clothing covered in blood. This is to show the audience that they were once a normal human before the apocalypse turned them into a zombie. The face of the zombie is normally pale, dirty and cut or infected to show that they are diseased.

In 'World War Z' the costumes of the other characters that are not zombies are also in their everyday clothes. They are not ripped or dirty yet as it is just the start of the Apocalypse. You also have the costumes of the police officers, and see that they also have guns.

Another picture from 'World War Z' shows a different type of costume. The army are shown, and they are wearing the full kit needed for that type of situation. They are fully prepared unlike the other photos, and have all the equipment such as guns and explosives. They are also seen with protective gear on such as helmets.

In this last photo, the character is in hospital clothes, which is commonly seen in zombie films. You can see that he looks scruffy and dirty, from the stain on his top. The reason for this character to be in these clothes is to suggest that he is either injured, infected or could mean that he is mentally unstable from the situation as the area looks pretty empty, apart from the rubbish seen on the ground.

The Impossible Film Trailer.

The trailer starts off with peaceful non diegetic music playing, whilst seeing a long high angled shot of a car driving down the road with palm trees on either side. This could suggest a family holiday away to somewhere sunny. The non diegetic music carries on playing whilst you see the shot change to an establishing shot of a pool and then of what is believed to be a family staying at this place. The audience are being made to see the trailer as a happy family holiday from the diegetic sound of the 'dad' talking saying
"Boys come and see this, isn't this great!"
This implies that the family are happy and excited to be on this holiday, and following after this is a long shot of the family all playing on the sandy beach in the sun. You are shown a close up shot of one of the boys under water having fun whilst swimming with a snorkel on, you can still see by the way he is looking at the camera that he is enjoying himself, and this is also implied by the other close up shots that come next of the mum smiling with a book in her hand relaxing, whilst watching her husband and son playing about on the beach. The music gets a little louder and quicker, when the family are sitting down eating at a beautiful place, filled with lights and decorations emphasising on how bright and happy they all are. You then see a shot reverse shot of the husband and wife, looking at each other both smiling. As the audience, the fact that everything seems so nice and perfect to this holiday you know that something bad may happen, this is effective as it creates a build up and sense of tension making you want to watch on.

Straight after the shot of the family eating dinner, you get a plain black background appear with white writing on it saying ' In 2014'. As the audience you know that something will start to happen after reading that. A close up of a red ball that the boy and the Father are playing with is emphasised as if it has some meaning, the colour of the ball is red and red is normally a colour that is associated with something bad. The peaceful non diegetic music is still playing in the background, until you see the mum looking a bit concerned by the diegetic sound of the wind that seems to be picking up. The red ball is then shown again with an extreme close up shot, emphasising it even more, however its in control of the boys foot and when he stops it the music also stop  and you are shown another black background with white writing saying ' Tragedy struck South east Asia'. The effect on the music stopping and the writing being shown is that as the audience you know for sure after reading the word ' Tragedy' that something very bad is about to occur.

Diegetic sounds of the birds are played whilst they fly away from the beach suggesting panic and worry. The extreme close up of the glass that the mum is looking into is shaking, and her expression on her face shows that she is worried and confused about what is going on. A low angle shot of the palm trees and the birds flying past, once again are emphasised as is they are trying to escape as they can see something is happening and they want to get away from it. The next camera shot is an establishing shot of the setting of the pool where the boy is shown holding the red ball, whilst watching the each palm tree in the distance vanish as if something is destroying them You can also hear the sound of the tress as they fall to the ground, and the sound of them falling getting louder as if it is getting closer to them. At this point in time, you can see that everyone was enjoying themselves seconds before this happened and did not know that whatever is about to happen will happen, this is shown through mise- en- scene. Everyone is either playing in the pool, in swim wear or relaxing on the chairs around in shorts and vest tops, showing how hot it is there. The way that the two boys are clinging onto their dad in the pool shows that they are scared and are holding onto him as it makes them feel safer. The birds eye shot that is used, shows the gush of water taking everything out in its path, this helps the audience see what it happening and understand the situation.

The dad shouts the name of his son who is stood there fixed on watching what is happening, whilst still holding the red ball. The boy doesn't seem to be as worried as the others as he hasn't run yet, however it could just mean that he is so surprised as to what is happening as it was so unexpected. You then see close ups of the water bursting through windows and houses smashing them, and a close up of the dad running through the pool with the two other boys in his arms. The build up of music gets more intense and then stops when shown a close up of the mum, squeezing her book tight whilst crouching against the glass wall she was looking at earlier closing her eyes as she know what is about to happen. Text is shown again saying' This is one family's true story of survival' this straight away catches the audiences eye and make you want to watch on as you feel emotional connected to the event as it was a true story.

Sad non - diegetic music starts playing whilst a close up of mans feet slowly walking as if they have been injured. The lighting is dark and gloomy, giving a sense of sadness and loneliness. You see an over the shoulder shot of the man walking towards some blurred lights, implying the feeling of hope. As the trailer goes on you hear here the man talking to explaining the experience to his son and reassuring him and his brother. Through mise- en- sense you can see how the costumes have changed an that their clothes are all ripped and dirty and their faces are all cut and bruised to. You see an over the shoulder shot over the sons shoulder whilst his dad is talking to him and you can see a close up of the dad's face and how the impact of the water has made his eye all red. The shot reverse shot is also used to show the deep conversation between the boy and his dad and shows the interest in the little boy to hear what his dad is saying. There is a flashback extreme close up shown of the man, upset and panicking as to where his family were and emphasising on the cuts on his face.

Shots of the mother and her son with the red ball are shown. The mum is under water fighting the objects that hit her and from this close up mid shot of her you can see how scared she is and as the audience it makes you question what she is feeling. The extreme close up of the two hands trying to hold on to each other shows how much they are fighting to stay together and to help each other out. An establishing shot of the setting is shown to show the audience just how much damage the tsunami has impacted on everyone's lives. A lot of close ups are shown after of the mother and son fighting to stay alive and a close up of the mum looking down at her wedding ring thinking of her husband and family, as she doesn't know what has happened to them. A low angle shot is used of some old people surrounding the mum and looking down at her, showing us that that something must be wrong with the mum. The people have their arms around her and are looking after her showing their goodness by the close up shot. You see the boy going around the hospital trying to help out other families find they're loved ones and in hope he will find his family too. You see shots of papers all over walls with missing people and the emotion of everyone around. The impact and affect of these shots make the audience feel like they are part of it and make them feel the emotion that they are feeling, to help them get into the film and watch the whole thing to find out the whole story behind it all.

Towards the end the music gets happier and you see a panning shot of two brothers that were separated in the tsunami running towards each other with their arms open as they see each other. You then get shown flash backs of the tsunami and the family before it all happened. It then ends with the mum in a hospital bed strapped up and the husband looking over her smiling. The way this trailer ends makes you want to see the whole thing as you feel like you want to know how they found each other and what they went through.
